My sophomore service hours
experience was terrific. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was looking forward to the
experience I would get from my sophomore service hours. I worked at an
organization called Casa Esperanza. Casa Esperanza is a safe place for children
affected by abuse, neglect, or HIV. Casa Esperanza provides residential care
for these children. During my duties there my friend and I had just one job, to
play with the kids and to do whatever they wanted. This service experience was
the best one I have ever had. Not only was it the most rewarding but it was a
ton of fun. Some of the kids I meant were awesome and totally hilarious, and
some were shy. When we visited my friend and I would play with them in the
park, play basketball, play soccer, or even give out candy and help decorate
cookies. This service project has better strengthened my faith in God. Seeing
these kids and hearing some of their stories make me realize how much I
actually have and that I should be grateful. Going to a Jesuit school means
adopting the Jesuit learning experience-Man for others-and applying that to
your daily life. This may be the best motto to live by. These service projects
give me an opportunity to see how some kids have to live. I am so blessed with
such a great life and such a great school that being a Man for Others is that
much more important. I think that all Christians are called to some form of
service, be it soup kitchen, mission trips, or just any community service to
help out. We all have a calling, a calling from God to live a holy life and
give to those less fortunate. I have come to realize that “giving to those less
fortunate” doesn't just mean giving them money, but giving them your time as
well. I met this one girl during my service at Casa Esperanza, we passed the
soccer ball back and forth for about 2 hours. I soon realized that the little
girl didn't care too much about that; she just wanted someone to talk to. We
talked for a very long time and it made me realize that what I was doing for
very important to these children. She pretty much told me the story of her life
up to now, she was only 6. I had other great experiences at Casa Esperanza as
well. My friend and I played basketball, soccer, and a lot of other sports with
this great group of kids. I had an amazing time. I think that we are all meant
and called to do God’s work, and for these service hours, I answered that call.
All in all this whole experience was great and made me realize what it truly
means to receive a Jesuit education.
